Social Event — Guided Visit to Izaña Observatory & Los Llanos de Ucanca
Overview
As part of the SDSS‑V LVM 2026 Science Meeting, we have organized a guided excursion to the Teide Observatory at Izaña, including a visit to the TTT (2‑m) telescope and other IAC facilities. The tour includes with a visit to the Los Llanos de Ucanca inside Teide National Park, showcasing some of the most spectacular volcanic landscapes of the Canary Islands. Afterwards we will have conference dinner at "La Esperancera", a local restaurant with traditional food (not for turists, real local!).
Transportation will be provided from La Laguna to Izaña and back. Detailed schedule, registration, and weather notes will be confirmed closer to the event.
Itinerary (Tentative)
- Departure from La Laguna (coach, ~ 9:00 )
- Arrival at Izaña Observatory · Safety briefing and site introduction (~10:00)
- Guided visit: control rooms, domes, and the TTT telescope (~11:30)
- Tansport to El Teide National Park. Picnic Lunch stop (~13:00)
- Visit to Los Llanos de Ucanca· Scenic stop and tour (~14:00)
- Transport to the meeting dinner place La Esperancera "Guachinche" (~16:00)
- Return to La Laguna (TBD)
Izaña Observatory (Teide)
Located at ~2,400 m above sea level, the Teide (Izaña) site offers exceptional atmospheric conditions for astronomical observations. It hosts a variety of solar and night‑time facilities operated by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) and international partners.
Los Llanos de Ucanca
One of the most iconic viewpoints of Teide National Park, Los Llanos de Ucanca offers sweeping views of Mount Teide and the surrounding caldera, with dramatic lava formations and wide open plains.

Practical Information
- Altitude: The observatory sits at ~2,400 m. If you are sensitive to altitude, please take precautions and consult a doctor if needed.
- Clothing: Mountain weather can be cool and windy even in March. Bring warm layers, sun protection, and sturdy shoes.
- Safety & access: Follow staff instructions at all times; some areas may have restricted access. Bags may be limited inside domes.
- Weather: The excursion is weather‑dependent; the itinerary may be adapted for safety.
